6 Things you shouldn’t carry in your handbag

Things you shouldn't carry in your handbag

Your handbag needs to carry all the essentials for easy access on the go. However, storing certain can cause damage, stains or smells that you may be unable to reverse.

With that in mind, fashion expert Nia Davis at the handbag and accessory brand Fiorelli, reveals six items you should never keep in your bag to keep it looking its best – and what you should do instead!

1. Umbrella

“A common mistake is to put wet items such as umbrellas directly inside your handbag or backpack. This is a bad idea, as the moisture can lead to mould or mildew, which causes lasting damage to your bag’s material.

An umbrella sleeve is a great way to keep your umbrella contained and prevent excess moisture from transferring to your handbag.”

2. Makeup

“Having your makeup close to hand is great for emergency touch-ups. However, if they are not properly sealed, they have a tendency to spill everywhere. And products like lotions and hand creams can leave behind oily stains.

To avoid potential leaks, I suggest keeping your cosmetics in a separate makeup bag inside your handbag. This not only adds an extra layer of protection for the lining of your bag but also offers a practical solution for keeping your bag organised.”

3. Hairbrushes

“Hairbrushes often carry oils and dirt that might stain the inside of your bag, particularly if the lining is a light colour. To avoid this, it’s wise to store your hairbrush in a separate compartment of your bag or in a compact case.”

4. Food & snacks

“Avoid carrying food and snacks in your bag that are likely to deteriorate and make a mess. Perishable items like fruits, yoghurt, or sandwiches can easily leak or spill, leading to staining and unpleasant odours that can linger long after the mess is cleaned up.

Instead, consider packing non-perishable snacks like nuts or granola bars that are less likely to create a mess and won’t spoil. If you do need to carry food or snacks, ensure they are securely sealed and stored in a container designed to prevent leaks.”

5. Pens

“Be cautious with items like pens (especially without lids). If you need to carry a pen with you, use a pencil case to prevent damage.

Ink stains set quickly, so swift action is crucial. For suede, gently use a suede eraser or very fine sandpaper to lift the mark. For fabric bags, a gentle detergent solution and a soft cloth often work to remove the stain.”

6. Keys

“Be extra careful with sharp objects such as keys, as their sharp edges can easily tear the delicate lining of your handbag.

To minimise the risk of damage, consider storing keys in a small pouch or key holder. This provides an extra layer of protection for both your bag’s interior and other belongings, ensuring that sharp edges won’t scratch, snag, or cause unnecessary wear over time.”
